Expand Selection
Grow a face selection using coplanar, adjacent-angle, or intersecting-normal rules.
Expand Selection is a face-driven tool that previews results before applying them.
What It Does
The tool evaluates your current face selection and proposes a larger face set using one of three methods:
| Method | Best for |
|---|---|
Coplanar | broad flat regions |
Adjacent | smooth transitions with a max angle threshold |
Intersecting Normals | faces whose normals converge on a common target |
Using The Dialog
- Select one or more faces.
- Open
Expand selection. - Choose a method and adjust its parameters.
- Watch the preview update in the viewport.
- Either
Selectthe result orAdd to Entity Set.

Typical Failure Reasons
MeshTools disables the final action and explains why when:
- no mesh is loaded,
- no faces are selected,
- the selected faces do not define a valid target for the chosen method,
- linear intersection is requested without enough qualifying faces.
Good Practice
Use Add to Entity Set when you are exploring candidate regions and do not want to lose the current working selection.
